Crabbe, George
(24 dic. 1754, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, Inglaterra–3 feb. 1832, Trowbridge, Wiltshire).

Poeta inglés. Creció en un humilde pueblo costero y aprendió el oficio de cirujano. En 1780 se trasladó a Londres, donde su poema The Village [La aldea] (1783) le reportó fama; escrito en parte como réplica al poema Deserted Village [Aldea desierta] (1770) de Oliver Goldsmith, intenta mostrar la penuria de los campesinos pobres. Continuaría con The Newspaper [El periódico] (1785), después de lo cual no volvió a publicar hasta 1807. En The Parish Register [El registro parroquial], Crabbe usa los registros de nacimientos, bodas y defunciones para describir los avatares de una comunidad rural. Por otra parte, la historia de Peter Grimes, el violento y aislado protagonista del poema The Borough [El pueblo], será la base de una conocida ópera de Benjamin Britten. Crabbe también escribió poemas en hexámetros dactílicos y se le considera el último de los poetas neoclásicos de Inglaterra.
